"My Friend"

My friend and I walked a path today.

We talked we laughed, we cried as we journeyed on our way.

I stumbled once or twice and fell.

A hand reached down to help me up and assured me, all is well.

The sun shone down upon us as we walked,

But the wind blew cold and hard, as if the sun it mocked.

I shivered as the wind struck me right to the bone.

An arm reached ‘round me shielding and assuring, you’re not alone.

As we continued on our chosen path we came upon a rapid stream.

It’s waters breaking to and fro against the rocks like an unconquerable team.

I hesitated as we started across, fearing I would not get to the other side.

A voice so sure said, "Follow in my footsteps, I will get you there" it had not lied.

For as I followed close behind I was filled with peace and an assurance, it’ll all be fine.

I joyed with my friend in the victory I knew had not been mine.

Next, a huge mountain to win, such a daunting task it seemed.

From joy to despair, the once broad smile upon my face no longer beamed.

So tired was I.

To this trip, it seemed I would never say good-bye.

I just sat beneath that giant’s foot in defeat.

This monster, I knew could not be beat.

My friend started climbing up, leaving me behind it would seem.

I was startled, I thought thus far we made a pretty good team.

"What are you doing?" I asked in great concern, "Aren’t we walking this path together today?"

"I’ve climbed this mountain before, I’ll show you the surest way".

So, with tired feet I started to climb, carefully watching my friend’s path.

It was sure, just as I was told and this seemed to awaken the mountain’s wrath.

Its razor edges, its cliffs and climbs, its rocks and crevasses all seemed to stand against us,

But to no avail, for my friend had conquered him before and feared not evil’s fuse.

I was constantly shown the way as we climbed higher and higher.

But, I grew weak during this daunting task and began to slip my need for help was dire.

Suddenly, I found myself in the safety of my friend’s arms, resting my head upon a shoulder so strong.

As I was carried the rest of the way my heart rejoiced and was filled with praise and song.

I was gently placed upon my feet, bruised, broken and battered from the climb.

My clothes were torn and tattered I was full of dirt and grim.

My friend took from water I had not seen,

And began to wash me clean.

My wounds were gently cleansed and bound.

I was placed beneath a mighty tree to rest, and there comfort found.

When had I last eaten? Hunger brought this question to my mind.

Before I could voice the thought bread, milk and honey lay before me and together we dined.

As I stood beside my friend upon that mountaintop and partook of the view.

I found some truths. I would have never made it thus far without that friendship true.

I would have never partaken of the magnificent scene that lay before me.

I would have never known the strength that there within me be.

I took a walk with my friend today.

What more need I say?
